London mayor Sadiq Khan welcomes guests and celebrates the rich diversity of storytelling at a special screening of Marvel Studios' Ms Marvel

Last night Disney+ and Marvel Studios held a special screening of Ms Marvel to celebrate stories and storytellers who reflect the rich diversity of our world. The screening was attended and introduced by Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, and hosted by Deana Hassanein ahead of its debut on Disney+ from today, June 8. The event was held at the Rich Mix Cinema, London, UK.

The event was also attended by Justine Simons OBE, the Deputy Mayor for Culture and Creative Industries, and Dr Debbie Weekes-Bernard, the Deputy Mayor for Communities and Social Justice. Over 100 VIP guests also included British Muslim world champion kickboxer and best-selling author Ruqsana Begum, leading Pakistani bloggers Pakistan Street Style and Annam Ahmad, Sky News presenter Saima Mohsin and British Asian actress Nikkita Chaddha, who featured in Marvel Studios' Eternals.


In attendance were guests and representatives from community groups and charities from organisations such as London Screen Academy, Mama Youth, the British Pakistan Foundation, Muslim Sisterhood Collective, North London Muslim Community Centre, the British Asian Trust, UK Muslim Film Council, Amal, SOAS Pakistan Society, and charity UBELE.

Marvel Studios’ Ms Marvel is a new, original series that introduces Kamala Khan, a Muslim American teenager growing up in Jersey City. An avid gamer and a voracious fan-fiction scribe, Kamala is a Super Hero megafan with an oversized imagination—particularly when it comes to Captain Marvel. Yet Kamala feels like she doesn’t fit in at school and sometimes even at home—that is, until she gets superpowers like the heroes she’s always looked up to. Life gets better with superpowers, right?

Ms Marvel stars Iman Vellani, Matt Lintz, Yasmeen Fletcher, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, Saagar Shaikh, Rish Shah, Fawad Khan, Laurel Marsden, Arian Moayed, Adaku Ononogbo, Alysia Reiner, Azhar Usman, Laith Nakli, Nimra Bucha, Travina Springer, with Aramis Knight. Episodes 1 and 6 are directed by Adil & Bilall, Episodes 1 and 3 by Meera Menon, with 4 and 5 by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. Headwriter for the series is Bisha K. Ali, and executive producers include Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Brad Winderbaum, Adil & Bilall, Bisha K. Ali, and Sana Amanat.

Marvel Studios’ Original Series Ms Marvel debuts exclusively on Disney+ beginning June 8.

Indian man to return home after violent Dublin attack

AN INDIAN man living in Dublin, who was assaulted by a group of teenagers over the weekend, has said he will return to India following the incident. He added that members of the Indian community in Ireland are feeling increasingly unsafe.

The man, who did not wish to be named, told Irish media he was attacked by three people last Sunday (10) evening while walking home from Fairview Park. One attacker, riding an electric scooter, kicked him in the stomach.

Boys overtake girls in A-level top grades, university places hit record

A-LEVEL students across England, Wales and Northern Ireland have achieved record-high results outside of the Covid years, with boys overtaking girls in the top grades for the first time since 2018.

Figures released on Thursday (14) showed that 28.3 per cent of entries were awarded an A or A*, up from 27.8 per cent last year and well above the 25.4 per cent seen in 2019. Almost one in ten results — 9.4 per cent — achieved the highest A* grade, the largest proportion since the top grade was introduced in 2010, excluding the pandemic years.
