Gunmen kill prominent Pakistan rights activist: police

A well-known Pakistani rights activist and social media campaigner has been shot dead by unidentified gunmen in the port city of Karachi, police said on Sunday.

Khurram Zaki, 40, was sitting at a roadside restaurant with a friend when four gunmen riding two motorcycles opened fire on him late Saturday, said Arab Mehar, a local senior police official.

“Khurram Zaki was killed in the shooting, while two others were wounded,” said Mehar, adding that an investigation has been launched into the attack.

Former journalist Zaki was an active campaigner for human rights and ran a website that condemns sectarianism.

He was known for his opposition to banned militant groups, including the Pakistani Taliban.

Zaki also led a protest against hardline cleric Maulana Abdul Aziz, from the red mosque in the capital Islamabad, calling for his arrest for inciting hate speech.

Pro-Taliban militant groups have carried out many attacks in the Karachi, Pakistan’s biggest city, which is home to numerous ethnic groups.

Rights groups called for the government to take decisive action against those behind Zaki’s killing.

UK passport fees to cross £100 for the first time under new hike from April 8

  • UK passport fee to rise above £100 for the first time.
  • New charges will apply to both domestic and overseas applications.
  • ETA fee also set to increase by 25 per cent from April 8.

For the first time, the cost of a standard UK passport is set to move beyond £100, as the government plans another round of fee increases from April 8, subject to Parliament’s approval.

The UK passport fee hike will see the price of an online adult application within the UK rise from £94.50 to £102. For children, the fee will go up from £61.50 to £66.50. The increase applies across the board — whether applying online or by post, from within the UK or overseas.
