Pakistan’s Haider Ali wins bronze in Rio

Haider Ali has won Pakistan its first medal at this year’s Rio Paralympic Games.

The 32-year-old athlete, who is his country’s only representative at the Games, won the bronze medal with a leap of 6.28m in the men’s T37 long jump category.


China’s Shang Guangxu won the gold with a jump of 6.77m while Brazil’s Evangelista Cardoso Mateus jumped 6.53m to bag silver in the event.

This is Ali’s second paralympic medal – he won a silver with a record jump of 6.44m in Beijing 2008.

INDIAN tennis player Rohan Bopanna announced his retirement at the age of 45 on Saturday, bringing an end to a professional career of more than two decades during which he won two Grand Slam titles and became the oldest men’s doubles world number one.

Bopanna became the oldest men’s Grand Slam champion in the professional era that began in 1968 when he won the Australian Open doubles title with Australia’s Matthew Ebden last year, a victory that also took him to the top of the world rankings.
