Pakistan’s Haider Ali wins bronze in Rio

Haider Ali has won Pakistan its first medal at this year’s Rio Paralympic Games.

The 32-year-old athlete, who is his country’s only representative at the Games, won the bronze medal with a leap of 6.28m in the men’s T37 long jump category.


China’s Shang Guangxu won the gold with a jump of 6.77m while Brazil’s Evangelista Cardoso Mateus jumped 6.53m to bag silver in the event.

This is Ali’s second paralympic medal – he won a silver with a record jump of 6.44m in Beijing 2008.

INDIA's R Vaishali won the Women's Candidates Tournament in Paphos, Cyprus, on Wednesday (15), defeating Ukrainian-Russian grandmaster Kateryna Lagno in a gruelling final-round encounter that lasted nearly five hours to seal her place at the World Championship later this year.

The 24-year-old from Chennai, southern India, finished with 8.5 points, confirming herself as the challenger to China's Ju Wenjun, the reigning five-time women's world champion.
