One killed, several injured as 6.1 magnitude earthquake hits Afghanistan

An earthquake of 6.1 magnitude hit Afghanistan on Wednesday and its tremors were felt in Pakistan and India.

The tremors resulted in the death of a girl child and injured at least 11 others in Pakistan, reports said.

The child from Pakistan's Quetta town was killed after the roof of her house collapsed during the earthquake.

Deputy Commissioner Shabir Mengal said there were incidents in other parts of Quetta, and some villages in the Balochistan province also felt the tremors.

"The injured have been rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. Emergency has been declared in all hospitals," he said, according to Indian news agency PTI.

The earthquake struck 270 km northeast of Kabul in the Hindu Kush mountains, and tremors were felt in New Delhi and Indian Kashmir region. There weren't any immediate reports of casualties or damage to properties in these regions.

A magnitude-7.6 quake in 2005 killed thousands of people in Pakistan, and it is considered one of the deadliest earthquakes to hit South Asia since the 1935 Quetta earthquake. Most of the damages were around north Pakistan and Pakistan administered Kashmir.
According to the Pakistani government’s official date, the death toll was about 87,350. However, the actual death toll was estimated to be over 100,000. More than 3.5 million were rendered homeless in the aftermath of the earthquake.
