Timely book from a superb writer about togetherness

Instead of being crushed up by the pressure, the writer has risen up to the challenge with another uniquely crafted read

BRITISH author Sara Nisha Adams receiving wide acclaim for her 2022 debut novel The Reading List meant that a lot was expected from her 2023 follow up book.

Instead of being crushed up by the pressure, the writer has risen up to the challenge with another uniquely crafted read.

The story spanning across two generations draws readers into the world of diverse characters. It begins with warring neighbours Winston and Bernice who must share a garden, which was once the centre of a thriving community, but has now been neglected. That conflict between contrasting personalities takes an unexpected turn when they both receive parcels, filled with a variety of pictures and notes that inspire them to bring back the community garden.

We are then transported to the early 1980s, into the world of newly arrived immigrants Maya, Prem and their baby daughter, who live in the same residence. The couple befriends a stand-offish neigh[1]bour they share a garden with, and a friendship blossoms. Something similar happens in the pre[1]sent and the mystery of the packages is solved.

The talented author has taken the theme of human relationships and expanded it further into a multilayered story set across different generations, with relatable characters, experiencing human emotions that are easy to form a connection with. The free-flowing writing filled with life-affirming lessons makes this an easy read. At a time of so much division in the world and social media disconnecting people, including neighbours from one another, this becomes a very timely book. The pages have the power to make a positive change. It is another triumph for an author who once again makes you believe in the importance of community.

All eyes will now be on what she does next after a strong start with two books brimming with beauty.
