Jitu Patel

FROM humble beginnings to a position of considerable community influence, Jitu Patel, popularly known as ‘Jitu Bhai’ has emerged as a catalyst for positive change. He is a dedicated advocate of Hinduism, a tireless champion of social justice, and a true architect of community empowerment. Patel, who is currently the Chair of Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS), UK & Europe, is undoubtedly one of the British-Asian community’s most influential leaders.

Patel was one of the senior faith leaders who were invited to the historic Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III in Westminster Abbey on May 6 2023. Representing the Hindu faith, he joined the multi-faith delegation to deliver a joint message to the King. Sharing his experience of being part of the iconic ceremony, he told Easten Eye he felt “lucky” to be able to take part and be seated amongst dignitaries, heads of states and the royalty. About the King, he said, “he’s a friend of BAPS, a friend of Hindus and of all faiths”. Patel who welcomed India’s defence minister Rajnath Singh when he visited Neasden Temple in London in January 2024, along with a delegation, said: “Our strong ties and positive engagement with the High Commission of India serve as a platform to contribute to shared British and Indian values.” He is also a successful and astute businessman, demonstrating a keen entrepreneurial spirit behind the scenes of community projects.


Patel invested in the Plymouth-based Burt Snacks in 2006 and became the majority shareholder in 2014. Soon, he transformed it into a niche premium British crisp brands, thereby turning around an ailing business. The company’s revenues went up from £29.5 million in 2017 to £68m in 2021. He was the chairman of the company until it was acquired by European food producer Europe Snacks in early 2023. He is seen as a leading light in the Hindu community, and due to his prominent leadership role at BAPS, he is frequently seen rubbing shoulders with the Blair and his wife, Cherie visited BAPS Sri Swaminarayan Mandir in 2006, they were welcomed at the ceremonial gates by Patel, who was then Chairman of the Board of Trustees. In November 2013,

he received David Cameron and his wife Samantha, who joined thousands of devotees and visitors at the temple to celebrate the Hindu New Year. He also accompanied the then Home Secretary Priti Patel when she visited Neasden Temple’s Covid-19 vaccination centre in February 2021. This unique position allowed him to advocate for the concerns of the Hindu community on a larger stage, ensuring that the voices of British Hindus were heard within the echelons of power.
