That is exactly what happened to Indian-origin tech professional Kaish Ansari, and his father's reaction has struck a surprisingly emotional chord online.
Ansari, who lives in the UK, recently shared a video of the moment he told his father about his sudden layoff. According to his LinkedIn profile, Ansari had worked as a data engineer at JPMorgan in Glasgow, Scotland.
Being laid off is difficult enough. Doing it while living abroad can make the situation even more daunting, with questions about money, career plans, immigration status and what comes next all arriving at once.
So, understandably, Ansari appeared apprehensive about breaking the news to his family in India.
But his father's reaction was remarkably calm.
“It is Allah's will. And something better might happen in the future.”

Instead, his father appeared more concerned about how his son was coping emotionally.

"I'm sharing this video not for sympathy, but to remind anyone going through a difficult phase that you are NOT alone. Your family is always with you, no matter what," he wrote.
He also acknowledged just how deeply a layoff can affect someone's confidence.
"Getting laid off is painful. No matter how experienced you are or how hard you've worked, suddenly losing your job can make you question yourself, your career, and your future. But sometimes, one conversation with your parents reminds you of what really matters."
That message is likely to resonate with anyone who has ever watched a carefully built career suddenly go sideways.
