Cannes 2025 took an emotional turn when Denzel Washington was presented with an unexpected Honorary Palme d’Or just before the premiere of Highest 2 Lowest, his latest film with long-time collaborator Spike Lee. The moment came as a surprise not just to audiences, but to Washington himself.
The announcement was made by Cannes festival director Thierry Frémaux after a career-spanning tribute reel played at the Palais. Spike Lee, who has directed Washington in five films, stepped on stage to hand over the award personally. “This is my brother,” Lee said, pulling Washington into a warm embrace. The audience responded with a long-standing ovation.

Washington, visibly moved, called the moment “completely unexpected.” “I’m emotional right now,” he told the crowd. “To be back here with Spike, to make another film together, I’m grateful. Truly grateful.”
The film they’re reuniting on, Highest 2 Lowest, is Lee’s take on Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 classic High and Low. Washington plays King David, a music mogul caught in a kidnapping mix-up involving his son and his driver’s child. The cast includes Aubrey Joseph, Elijah Wright, Jeffrey Wright, A$AP Rocky, Ice Spice, and Wendell Pierce. The film is being shown out of competition at Cannes and will release in cinemas on 22 August before streaming on Apple TV+ in September.

This is only Washington’s second time at Cannes. His first was over three decades ago, in 1993, for Much Ado About Nothing. The Honorary Palme d’Or is rarely given, only 22 recipients since 2002, and even fewer have received it without prior announcement. The last time this happened was in 2022, when Tom Cruise was surprised with the honour for Top Gun: Maverick.
Washington’s film legacy is already packed with milestones: two Oscars, a Tony Award, a Presidential Medal of Freedom, and multiple Oscar nominations including for Malcolm X, Flight, Fences, and The Tragedy of Macbeth. But this Cannes honour adds another rare jewel to his crown.

The award also landed on a symbolic date: 16 years to the day after Do the Right Thing, Lee’s breakthrough film, made its explosive Cannes debut. Monday night wasn’t just a celebration of Denzel Washington, but a nod to a creative partnership that continues to shape cinema even today.
The next time you think of a big-budget show, forget Game of Thrones or The Rings of Power. The new Harry Potter reboot is set to leave them all behind and not just in storytelling, but in cost. With a jaw-dropping budget of over $4.2 billion (₹33,600 crore), this upcoming series is on track to be the most expensive television production ever attempted.
Each of the 42 planned episodes, spread across seven seasons, will reportedly cost more than $100 million (₹837 crore). That’s more than many Marvel movies and nearly double the per-episode spend of Amazon’s The Rings of Power. But where is all that money going?
A massive part of the budget is being poured into something rarely attempted on this scale: a custom-built town. Nicknamed “Potterville,” this mini city is under construction at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden and will house life-size recreations of iconic locations like Hogwarts, King’s Cross Station, and Privet Drive. The price tag for this alone? Around £1 billion (₹10,700 crore). The idea is not just about visual realism but a long-term investment in the franchise’s future, with the possibility of spin-offs or other productions set in the same magical universe.
Unlike the original film series, which had to condense the books into blockbuster-length scripts, this version aims to give each book its own season, allowing for a deeper dive into the world J.K. Rowling created. The show is expected to go into the details that never made it to the big screen.
A fresh cast will step into some of the most recognisable roles in pop culture. John Lithgow will take on the role of Albus Dumbledore, joined by Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Snape, and Nick Frost as Hagrid, among others. The trio of young leads Harry, Hermione, and Ron are yet to be announced.
Set to film on a sprawling 200-acre site, this reboot marks a major moment for HBO and Warner Bros. Whether it lives up to expectations or not, it’s already rewritten the rules of television production. And in the process, it’s raised a question: how much is too much to bring magic back to life?
At a recent Bvlgari event in Sicily, Priyanka Chopra turned heads in an elegant beige outfit, joining BLACKPINK’s Lisa and Chinese star Liu Yifei for an evening filled with fashion, glitz, and glamour. The trio, all associated with the luxury brand, were seen posing together, sparking a wave of reactions online as fans shared photos and videos from the event.
While Liu dazzled in a silver-toned off-shoulder gown, Lisa chose a white dress with soft yellow accents. Priyanka, keeping things minimal and classic, wore a sheer beige dress with subtle gold detailing, matched with Bvlgari jewellery, and tied her hair back into a sleek bun.
During the red carpet moments, Priyanka stood out not just for her look, but also for her gesture of gratitude. After posing for the photographers, she folded her hands in a traditional namaste, a simple thank-you that felt personal amidst all the glamour.

Inside the event, she was seen chatting with Bvlgari CEO Jean-Christophe Babin and later sharing a light-hearted moment with Lisa. A short clip from the evening shows Priyanka asking Lisa to switch spots while posing, leading to a burst of laughter between them.

This isn’t the first time Priyanka has represented the brand at their global events. She attended a similar gathering in Rome last year, wearing an off-shoulder cream and black dress and flaunting Bvlgari’s Serpenti Aeterna necklace alongside Anne Hathaway and Shu Qi.
Beyond red carpets, Priyanka is staying busy with a packed slate of projects. She’ll be seen in Heads of State, co-starring Idris Elba and John Cena, and in The Bluff, where she plays a pirate in the Caribbean. Back in Indian cinema, she’s confirmed to be part of SSMB29, a much-anticipated film by SS Rajamouli with Mahesh Babu. The project is expected to unfold in two parts, with releases slated for 2027 and 2029.
The teaser for War 2 is finally here, and it’s already sparking major buzz across fan circles. Released by Yash Raj Films on Jr NTR’s birthday, the teaser pits him against Hrithik Roshan in a deadly game of cat and mouse, played out on speeding trains, airborne stunts, and sprawling international backdrops.
War 2, a follow-up to the 2019 action hit War, is directed by Ayan Mukerji and brings Jr NTR into the Hindi film space for the first time. He’s not here as a sidekick or support. He’s the main challenger to Hrithik’s Kabir, RAW’s most celebrated agent. The teaser opens with NTR’s voiceover warning Kabir that while he’s been watching him closely, Kabir has no idea who he is. That changes now.
The action is intense: hand-to-hand combat, sword fights, and explosions spread across six countries, including Japan, Italy, and Russia. There’s a blink-and-you-miss-it glimpse of Kiara Advani, adding a hint of glamour and perhaps romance to an otherwise adrenaline-heavy drama.

Online, fans have already begun calling it the next big thing after RRR and Pathaan, even predicting that this could be the most successful outing in the YRF Spy Universe yet. One user put it simply: “Blockbuster incoming.” Hrithik shared the teaser on social media with a warning: “No place for mercy. Welcome to hell.” Jr NTR replied in kind, promising to “hunt him down.”

War 2 is the sixth entry in the YRF Spy Universe, following the likes of Ek Tha Tiger, Tiger Zinda Hai, War, Pathaan, and Tiger 3. With two powerhouses like Hrithik and NTR leading the charge and Ayan Mukerji behind the camera, expectations are sky-high.
The film hits theatres on 14 August, right before Independence Day, and will release in Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil. As fans gear up for this explosive showdown, the stage is set for a cinematic face-off unlike anything we've seen before.

Kareena Kapoor chose a quiet family evening over the much-awaited Guns N' Roses concert
Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor chose a quiet family evening over the much-awaited Guns N’ Roses concert in Mumbai this past weekend. Instead of joining the crowd at Mahalaxmi Race Course, she stayed home with her husband Saif Ali Khan and their children, enjoying a cosy music session together.
Kareena shared a glimpse of this private moment on Instagram. She posted a photo of Saif patiently teaching Taimur to play the guitar, with the young boy sitting on a stool, fully absorbed in learning. Kareena captured this from outside the room, framing the father and son in a warm, candid shot. She wrote, “Might have missed Guns N’ Roses… but I got my own band,” adding fire and heart emojis to the story.

This intimate jam session highlighted a different side of the Kapoor-Khan family, one filled with simple pleasures and shared moments rather than the usual glitz. For Kareena, these moments clearly matter more than attending a big public event, no matter how exciting.
Meanwhile, the Guns N’ Roses concert marked the legendary band’s first performance in India in 13 years. The iconic lineup, including Axl Rose, Slash, and Duff McKagan, returned with their touring band for a high-energy show packed with classics like “Sweet Child O’ Mine” and “November Rain.” The Mumbai crowd’s excitement was palpable, with Axl Rose expressing his happiness to be back on stage in the city.

On the professional front, Kareena was last seen in Rohit Shetty’s action film Singham Again, sharing screen space with big names like Ajay Devgn and Deepika Padukone. Rumours suggest she may next star in Meghna Gulzar’s upcoming project, tentatively called Daayra, alongside Malayalam actor Prithviraj Sukumaran, though details remain unconfirmed.
While Guns N’ Roses rocked Mumbai, Kareena found her own kind of music and magic at home and sometimes, the best concerts happen right in your living room with loved ones.

Mamitha Baiju and Suriya to team up for the first time in Venky Atluri’s next
Mamitha Baiju has landed a major break in her career as she will be starring opposite Suriya in his next film, directed by Venky Atluri. The official launch of the project, Suriya’s 46th, took place recently in Hyderabad with a traditional puja ceremony. The film brings together a strong cast that includes Raveena Tandon and Radhika Sarathkumar and is being backed by Sithara Entertainments. G.V. Prakash Kumar will handle the music, while Nimish Ravi is in charge of cinematography.
For Mamitha, this casting carries more weight than just another role. She has been open in interviews about how much she has admired Suriya from a young age and how much she has wanted to work with him. The two almost shared screen space earlier in Vanangaan, but the project underwent major changes. Suriya left the film due to creative differences, and Mamitha was eventually replaced. Though she had already shot scenes with him, that version of the film never saw the light of day.
Now, with Suriya 46, that opportunity has finally come full circle.
Mamitha’s rise has been steady. After beginning with smaller roles, she became widely known after the Malayalam blockbuster Premalu. Though she hasn’t had another Malayalam release since, she is increasingly being cast in Tamil films. Her Tamil debut, Rebel, didn’t do well commercially, but her performance opened more doors. She’s also part of Jana Nayagan, which marks Vijay’s final film before entering politics, and Dude, where she stars opposite Pradeep Ranganathan.

Suriya, meanwhile, was last seen in Retro, directed by Karthik Subbaraj. The film earned praise for its performances, though its writing in the latter half received criticism. His earlier big-budget film Kanguva also had mixed commercial results. With back-to-back releases that didn’t quite become blockbusters, Suriya 46 is expected to be a key film in his lineup.
Directed by Atluri, who was praised for Lucky Baskhar, this new project is shaping up to be an important collaboration for both Suriya and Mamitha. The shoot is set to begin on 30 May. For Mamitha, it’s not just a film but a long-delayed wish finally taking form.
