Rishi Kapoor to be replaced in Bollywood remake of The Intern

In January, Azure Entertainment, Ka Productions and Warner Bros. announced their plans to co-produce a Hindi-language remake of Nancy Meyers’ superhit film The Intern (2015). The makers also announced the lead cast and revealed that Deepika Padukone and Rishi Kapoor had been roped in to play the roles essayed by Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro respectively in the original.

However, if latest reports are to be believed, there is some reshuffle in the casting of the remake. The update on the casting of the film is that veteran actor Rishi Kapoor, who is currently recovering from his poor health after his cancer treatment, may get replaced. According to reports, co-producers of the film Deepika Padukone and Sunil Khetrapal have decided to re-cast Kapoor’s role.

“The other obvious choice for the role was Amitabh Bachchan Saab. But Deepika has already done a fine film, Piku (2015), with Bachchan Saab. She was very keen on working with Chintuji (Rishi Kapoor), whom she has known and admired for a long time. Unfortunately, with things turning out the way they have, it seems unlikely that this untried casting combination will happen,” a source in the know informs a publication.

A director for the still untitled adaptation is yet to be finalized by the makers. If all goes well, the remake will be entering theatres in 2021.

Apart from the official remake of The Intern, Deepika Padukone is also looking forward to working with director Shakun Batra on his next directorial outing. To be made under the banner of Dharma Productions, the still untitled film also features newcomers Siddhant Chaturvedi and Ananya Panday on its cast. It is expected to start rolling once the Coronavirus pandemic is under control.
