Good Newwz off to a good start in domestic market

Dharma Productions’ latest offering Good Newwz, which revolves around two couples who come to know that their sperms have been exchanged with each other, has opened well in key territories in the domestic market. The film has generated better response at multiplexes than single screens across India, according to reports.

Good Newwz stars Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Kiara Advani and Diljit Dosanjh in important roles. The film hit the marquee today on 27th December and witnessed around 25% occupancy. Released in 3100 screens throughout India, Good Newwz is expected to grow well over the weekend and put up a great total before entering weekdays.

The film reunites superstar Akshay Kumar with Kareena Kapoor Khan after a massive gap of nine years. The two were last seen together in Sajid Nadiadwala’s Kambakkht Ishq in 2010. It also marks his second collaboration with producer Karan Johar. The duo previously collaborated on Kesari, which released earlier this year and performed extremely well at the box-office.

Good Newwz is set to be Akshay Kumar’s fourth box-office hit of the year. The superstar began 2019 with the success of Kesari and followed it up with Mission Mangal and Housefull 4. His line-up for the year 2020 includes such big-ticket movies as Sooryavanshi, Laxmmi Bomb and Prithviraj.

Kareena Kapoor Khan, on the other hand, is presently busy shooting for Viacom18 Motion Pictures and Aamir Khan Productions’ Laal Singh Chaddha, starring superstar Aamir Khan in the lead role. She will be reteaming with the superstar after their 2012 film Talaash. Before Laal Singh Chaddha, Bebo will be seen in Maddock Films’ Angrezi Medium, which is scheduled to release on 20th March, 2020. The satirical drama also stars Irrfan Khan and Radhika Madan in important roles.

How Lee Cronin’s 'The Mummy' turns a classic adventure into a domestic horror

Highlights

  • Moves away from the adventure tone of The Mummy (1999) into possession-led horror
  • Shifts the setting from desert tombs to a family home in Albuquerque
  • Focuses on parental fear and a “returned” child rather than treasure hunting
  • Relies on body horror, sound design and shock value over spectacle
  • Critics call it bold and unsettling, but uneven in storytelling

From desert spectacle to domestic dread

For decades, The Mummy has been tied to adventure, romance and spectacle, most famously in The Mummy (1999). That version thrived on sweeping desert landscapes, archaeological intrigue and a sense of escapism.

Lee Cronin takes a sharply different route. His reworking strips away the sense of adventure and relocates the horror into the home. The story still begins in Egypt, anchored by an ancient sarcophagus, but quickly shifts to the United States, where the real tension unfolds inside a family house.
