'Ganapath' review: Badly-made futuristic film fails on every single level

THE idea of making a futuristic film about a hero rising up against the elite to fight for the oppressed might have seemed like a great one.

But when there is terrible writing and a director who doesn’t seem to know what he is doing, then it quickly falls flat. Tiger Shroff plays a womanising playboy, who is thrown out of an advanced technology driven utopia and finds himself in an area inhabited by the starving poor, who have been left behind. He soon realises there is a greater purpose for him and starts training to fulfil his destiny.

From the awful special effects to a story that quickly starts to unravel, nothing works about this badly-made movie. There is also bad editing, characters that are just not believable, lacklustre music and a slow pace that just doesn’t keep you engaged.

It’s a wonder that no one involved with the movie noticed the shortcomings during production.

Like most of his movies, Tiger shows off some flashy fighting and his chiselled physique, but that just isn’t enough to keep even his most die-hard fans engaged. Kriti Sanon is completely wasted in this film, and a barely recognisable Amitabh Bachchan has at best a cameo. There isn’t too much else going on with this mega-budget movie, which is an obvious colossal waste of money. It could perhaps have offered audiences something with much stronger writing and a director with common sense.

There is supposed to be a sequel, but even the producers are surely not silly enough to pump more money into this unbelievable mess.

When all the calculations are done, Ganapath will be one of this year’s biggest box office disasters because it really is that bad. Avoid this so-called action film when it is inevitably dumped onto a streaming site.

UK court throws out terror charge against Kneecap rapper Mo Chara over Hezbollah flag case

Highlights:

  • Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, known as Mo Chara, had a charge of displaying a Hezbollah emblem thrown out at Woolwich Crown Court.
  • Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring ruled the prosecution was brought forward unlawfully due to a missed deadline.
  • The Kneecap member and his supporters claimed the case was a politically motivated attempt to silence pro-Palestinian voices.
  • Northern Ireland’s First Minister Michelle O’Neill welcomed the decision, criticising the initial charges.

In a significant legal development, a terror-related charge against Kneecap rapper Mo Chara has been dismissed. The ruling at Woolwich Crown Court centred on a procedural misstep by prosecutors, who filed the charge one day outside the legal time limit. This outcome brings a close, for now, to a case that had become a flashpoint in debates about artistic expression and political speech. The incident stems from a London concert where the Irish-language hip-hop artist waved a flag.
