SHAHEEN Shah Afridi completed a 10-wicket match haul to bowl Pakistan to a series-levelling 109-run victory over the West Indies in the final session of the second and final Test at Sabina Park in Kingston on Tuesday (24).
Frustrated by the loss of an entire day's play and another session to rain and a sodden outfield over the weekend, Shaheen kept Pakistan's hopes alive with a devastating first innings effort of six for 51 on day four – his best Test innings performance – and returned on the final day to strike critical blows.
Then, when it seemed the weather would ruin their desperate push for victory, he came back for a final spell with the second new ball to take the last two wickets and give his team a tremendous triumph with one hour to spare.
Starting the day at 49 for one and facing the unlikely target of 329, the West Indies were again let down by their top-order batting, sliding to 113 for six in the mid-afternoon despite a battling 39 from captain Kraigg Brathwaite.
Former skipper Jason Holder eventually top-scored with 47 but it was his demise to Nauman Ali, the left-arm spinner's third wicket, which eased a rising sense of panic in the Pakistan camp. Then Afridi, new ball in hand and with eight wickets down, trapped Kemar Roach leg-before.
Afridi then induced a mistimed drive from Joshua da Silva for Faheem Ashraf to take the catch at mid-on and dismiss the West Indies for 219 and seal yet another come-from-behind effort for Pakistan in the Caribbean.
As in 2005 and 2011, Pakistan, this time led by Babar Azam, lost the first Test but rebounded to take the second and share the honours with the hosts.
"This was a very important win for us, especially given the way we lost that first Test," said Babar, reflecting on the heart-breaking one-wicket defeat at the same venue nine days earlier.
"My partnership with Fawad Alam and his brilliant century was, of course, valuable, but I have to give massive credit to the bowling of Shaheen because he makes things a lot easier for us."
Shaheen's second-innings figures of four for 43 gave him a match haul of 10 for 94 and with a series-leading tally of 18 wickets in the two matches at an average of 11.28, it was inevitable that the 21-year-old would be both man of the match and man of the series.
"It was a great effort, a team effort. This is what the team needed and I am just happy that I was able to deliver," said the left-arm pacer.
"It was really tough out there, extremely hot and even though we were picking up wickets along the way we really had to work very hard and credit must go to the entire bowling unit."
Shaheen started the ball rolling for Pakistan within the first half-hour of the day when he removed nightwatchman Alzarri Joseph via an ambitious top-edged hook which was held by wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan. He then returned just as a shower was about to sweep across the ground in the mid-afternoon to break a stubborn seventh-wicket partnership between Kyle Mayers and Holder.
Mayers' dismissal was a great relief to Pakistan as just a couple of overs earlier he was dropped at short-leg by Abid Ali off Nauman.
Abid was also badly at fault when he missed Brathwaite at slip off Faheem in the morning session.
On 25 at the time, the West Indies captain carried on to 39 but fell shortly after lunch when a top-edged cut off Nauman found a grateful Fawad Alam at backward point.
"Consistency is what we need. I just think it is a mindset because Test cricket is never easy and all the guys technically can bat," said Brathwaite, attempting to pinpoint the cause of his team's repeated batting failures.
"We have to find ways to build innings, to cope with the first 30 balls and get through those tough periods."
War 2 trailer features Hrithik Roshan’s Kabir facing off with Jr NTR’s unnamed officer in a darker, grittier spy battle.
Kiara Advani surprises with intense combat scenes, including a fight with Hrithik.
The film is directed by Ayan Mukerji and is the sixth chapter in YRF’s spy universe.
War 2 releases worldwide in theatres and IMAX on 14 August 2025.
Yash Raj Films has released the highly anticipated trailer of War 2, and it is a shift in tone from the slick action of its 2019 predecessor. Starring Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR, and Kiara Advani, the Ayan Mukerji directorial promises a complex battle between loyalty, duty, and national pride. With its focus on betrayal, conflicting ideologies, and large-scale action set-pieces, War 2 positions itself as the most intense chapter yet in the YRF Spy Universe.

What’s the plot of War 2 and where does it fit in the YRF Spy Universe?
War 2 continues the story of Kabir Dhaliwal, played by Hrithik Roshan, now a shadow operative for RAW who has sacrificed everything for the country. He is now pitted against a formidable new adversary, Jr NTR’s elite special forces officer. Despite being on opposing sides, both characters declare “India First,” setting the stage for a morally grey conflict where personal agendas collide with patriotic ideals.
This is the sixth film in the YRF Spy Universe, following the success of Tiger 3, Pathaan, and the original War. With no direct crossover revealed yet, fans are still speculating if Salman Khan or Shah Rukh Khan will make a cameo in the film.
How does Kiara Advani’s role differ from earlier female leads?
Kiara Advani’s character has stirred conversation online, with fans noting that she is more than just a romantic interest. Seen both romancing and fighting Hrithik’s Kabir, she’s reportedly playing the daughter of Colonel Luthra, the RAW handler played by Ashutosh Rana. Her action scenes, particularly a hand-to-hand fight with Hrithik and a gunpoint standoff, have impressed audiences, with many saying she has more screen presence than Vaani Kapoor’s role in the first film.
From combat sequences to donning the army uniform, Kiara seems poised for a bigger arc, especially with the upcoming Alpha, another female-led spy film from YRF starring Alia Bhatt and Sharvari.

What’s the fan reaction to Jr NTR’s Bollywood debut in War 2?
While the trailer generated buzz, not all reactions have been positive. Jr NTR, a superstar in the Telugu industry, makes his Hindi action debut here, but many netizens have criticised his look, dialogue delivery, and the VFX-enhanced physique. Some called him a “misfit” in YRF’s aesthetic, while others felt his intensity fell flat next to Hrithik’s seasoned spy act.
However, a section of his fanbase defended the portrayal, calling it “raw” and “different” from mainstream Bollywood heroes. The mixed response could reflect the challenge of balancing the whole pan-India appeal with genre consistency in a tightly-knit cinematic universe.
War 2 is set for a grand theatrical release on 14 August 2025, strategically timed for India’s Independence Day weekend. With Rajinikanth’s Coolie also releasing the same day, it’s set to be one of the biggest box office clashes of the year.
Director Ayan Mukerji, fresh off Brahmastra, aims to reinvent his style in this espionage thriller. The trailer ends with a haunting Bhagavad Gita shloka, echoing the film’s philosophical undertones. Whether War 2 can match or surpass the benchmark set by Pathaan or Animal remains to be seen, but it’s clear that YRF is betting big on this action sequel.

Tech firm Astronomer responds to CEO affair clip with unexpected Gwyneth Paltrow cameo
Astronomer, a US-based tech firm, faced scrutiny after a kiss-cam clip of its CEO and HR head went viral.
Gwyneth Paltrow, Chris Martin’s ex-wife, was hired as a “very temporary” spokesperson.
The cheeky video ignored the scandal while promoting Astronomer’s AI and data products.
Netizens hailed it as “a PR masterclass,” though some said the move came a week too late.
After a viral Coldplay concert moment exposed an alleged office affair at tech startup Astronomer, the company has flipped the narrative, and the internet can’t stop talking. In a calculated PR move, Astronomer released a witty video starring Oscar-winning actor Gwyneth Paltrow as their “very temporary” spokesperson.
The kicker? Paltrow is the ex-wife of Coldplay’s frontman Chris Martin, the same man who commented on the now-notorious kiss-cam clip that sparked the scandal.

What was the Coldplay kiss-cam scandal involving Astronomer?
The now-viral moment took place on 16 July at Coldplay’s Boston concert. As the crowd enjoyed the show at Gillette Stadium, a kiss-cam panned to Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and the company’s HR head Kristin Cabot. The pair were seen intimately close, but their startled reaction and attempt to hide their faces immediately raised eyebrows.
Coldplay frontman Chris Martin quipped from the stage, “Either they’re having an affair or they’re just very shy.” Within hours, the footage flooded social media.
Both Byron and Cabot, who are reportedly married to other people, resigned from their roles days later.

Why did Astronomer bring in Gwyneth Paltrow?
On 25 July, Astronomer released a satirical video titled Thank You for Your Interest in Astronomer. The clip opens with Paltrow, poised, calm, and ironic, saying she’s been hired “on a very temporary basis to speak on behalf of the 300+ employees at Astronomer.”
She goes on to answer vague corporate FAQs about Astronomer’s products and upcoming data conference, while ignoring the elephant in the room. Each time a question about the scandal appears on screen (like “OMG! What the actual f—”), it’s abruptly cut off with Paltrow switching to a technical explanation about Astronomer’s software.
Paltrow’s involvement, given her connection to Chris Martin, wasn’t lost on viewers. One user wrote, “This belongs in the crisis PR hall of fame.”
How has the public responded to Astronomer’s PR move?
Online reactions to the Gwyneth Paltrow ad were overwhelmingly positive. Social media users praised the tech company’s bold approach, calling it a “10/10 PR recovery” and a masterstroke in brand strategy.
“You got Chris Martin’s ex-wife??? Savage,” one post read.
“Instead of burying the scandal, they rode the wave and controlled the narrative. That’s how you do PR,” said another.
However, a few critics pointed out that the response came a bit late, missing the peak of the trend cycle. “A week earlier and this would’ve broken the internet,” one user commented.
Still, most agreed the tactic was smart, sharp, and refreshingly humorous for a tech firm under scrutiny.

What’s next for Astronomer?
Interim CEO Pete DeJoy acknowledged the media frenzy as “unusual and surreal” for a data startup but said it had made Astronomer “a household name.” The company remains focused on its enterprise tools for managing Apache Airflow and is preparing for its “Beyond Analytics” conference this September.

Whether the publicity surge translates into long-term gains remains to be seen. But for now, Astronomer’s crisis response is being studied as a standout case in corporate damage control.

Reynolds said an effective wealth tax 'doesn’t exist anywhere in the world' and criticised it as a populist measure.
BUSINESS SECRETARY Jonathan Reynolds has ruled out introducing a wealth tax, describing it as a “daft” idea that would not work.
His comments came as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) warned that Britain will need to raise other taxes or cut spending to meet fiscal targets, The Times reported.
Lord Kinnock has called for a 2 per cent annual levy on assets over £10 million, a proposal backed by several Labour MPs. However, Reynolds dismissed the suggestion, telling Labour backbenchers to “get serious”.
He told GB News: “The idea you can just levy everyone … What if your wealth was not in your bank account, what if it was in fine wine or art? How would we tax that? This is why this doesn’t exist.”
Reynolds said an effective wealth tax “doesn’t exist anywhere in the world” and criticised it as a populist measure. He added that the Labour government has already increased taxes on wealth, citing private jets, private schools, inheritance tax and capital gains tax.
Labour MP Richard Burgon argued that refusing to tax wealth while cutting benefits has harmed the government’s support.
Meanwhile, the IMF said chancellor Rachel Reeves would need to consider tax rises on middle earners, scrapping the pensions triple lock and introducing NHS charges to balance the budget.
The IMF praised Reeves for “growth-friendly” policies but warned that high debt and an ageing population mean tax rises or spending cuts are unavoidable.
Reeves said the report confirmed that her policies are supporting Britain’s economic recovery.

Indian Border Security Force (BSF) personnel stand guard at the India-Bangladesh border in Fulbari BOP (Border outpost) on the outskirts of Siliguri, India on May 9, 2025.
INDIA has expelled hundreds of ethnic Bengali-speaking Muslims to Bangladesh without following due process, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said on Thursday, accusing the government of violating rules and targeting Muslims.
The government of prime minister Narendra Modi has maintained a strict stance on immigration, particularly from neighbouring Bangladesh. Top authorities have previously referred to migrants as "termites" and "infiltrators".
Critics say these policies have increased fear among India's estimated 200 million Muslims, especially Bengali speakers, a language spoken widely in eastern India and Bangladesh.
According to HRW, over 1,500 Muslim men, women and children were forcibly expelled to Bangladesh between May 7 and June 15, citing data from Bangladeshi authorities.
"India's ruling BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) is fuelling discrimination by arbitrarily expelling Bengali Muslims from the country, including Indian citizens," said Elaine Pearson, Asia director at HRW.
"The Indian government is putting thousands of vulnerable people at risk in apparent pursuit of unauthorised immigrants, but their actions reflect broader discriminatory policies against Muslims," Pearson added.
New Delhi has said those deported are undocumented migrants.
However, Pearson said claims by authorities that the expulsions were aimed at tackling illegal immigration were "unconvincing" due to "their disregard for due process rights, domestic guarantees, and international human rights standards".
‘They were holding guns’
HRW said it had sent its findings and questions to India’s home ministry but had not received a response.
The report documented the experiences of 18 people.
A 51-year-old daily wage worker told HRW that he "walked into Bangladesh like a dead body" after India's Border Security Force (BSF) took him to the border after midnight.
"I thought they (the BSF) would kill me because they were holding guns and no one from my family would know," the worker said in the report.
Bangladesh, mostly surrounded by India, has seen ties with New Delhi deteriorate since a mass uprising in 2024 overthrew Dhaka's pro-India government.
India intensified its operations against migrants after an April attack in Indian-administered Kashmir killed 26 people, mainly Hindu tourists. New Delhi accused Pakistan of supporting the attack, a claim Islamabad denied.
In a nationwide security drive, authorities detained thousands, with many eventually sent across the border to Bangladesh.
"The government is undercutting India's long history of providing refuge to the persecuted as it tries to generate political support," Pearson said.
India has also been accused of deporting Rohingya Muslim refugees to Myanmar, with navy ships leaving them off the coast of the conflict-hit country.
