US president Donald Trump on Thursday (3) spoke with the widow and colleagues of Indian-origin police officer Ronil “Ron” Singh, who was shot dead allegedly by an illegal immigrant last week in California.

The 33-year-old Newman police officer was shot and killed at a traffic stop by an illegal immigrant named Gustavo Perez Arriaga when he was planning to flee to his native Mexico.

“This afternoon, President Trump spoke with the family and law enforcement colleagues of fallen Newman, California, police officer Ronald “Ron” Singh,” White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said.

“The President praised officer Singh’s service to his fellow citizens, offered condolences, and commended law enforcement’s rapid investigation, response, and apprehension of the suspect,” Sanders said.

“Included in the President’s calls were Corporal Singh’s wife, Anamika ‘Mika’ Chand-Singh; Newman, California Police Chief Randy Richardson and Sheriff Adam Christianson of Stnislaus County, California,” she said.

Singh, a native of Fiji, joined the force in July 2011.

Singh was “working overtime on Christmas night to provide the best for his family.”

“A few moments later he called out ‘shots fired’ over the radio,” the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement. “Multiple agencies responded to assist, and Singh was found at the scene with gunshot wounds.”

“He was living the American Dream. He immigrated here from the Fiji Islands, just like my parents did, and was definitely enjoying the American Dream,” Deputy Raj Singh was quoted as saying by PTI.
