Producer Boney Kapoor confirms a sequel to cult classic Mr India

Contrary to rumours that there will never be a sequel to cult classic Mr India (1987) after the sad demise of seasoned actress Sridevi, producer Boney Kapoor has just confirmed that the project will take shape soon.

The producer says that after the death of wife and actress, Sridevi, who played the female lead in the original film, has made him more determined to make a sequel to one of the most-loved films of Indian cinema.

“The idea is to create a reboot first, and then, make a franchise of it. It needs to be made more contemporary. We have a basic structure in mind. We haven’t decided on a timeline yet, but intend to make it soon,” said Boney Kapoor.

The producer went on to add, “While Sri was considered a glamorous star earlier, the audiences’ perception of her changed after Mr India — then on, she was seen as a powerful actress. Anil too became more legitimate a performer with the film. After Sri, I have even more reason to make the film now.”

When asked if director Shekhar Kapur will return to helm the reboot, the filmmaker said, “If Shekhar is free, he can direct it. The cast and crew made the film what it was, and if anyone from the original line-up wants to be part of it, they can join us again.”
