A Pakistani court ordered former Prime Minister Imran Khan's release on bail for two weeks, his lawyer said on Friday (12), following an arrest that sparked deadly unrest in the nuclear-armed nation.

The arrest, ruled "invalid and unlawful" by the Supreme Court a day earlier, fuelled instability in the nation of 220 million at a time of economic crisis, with record inflation, anaemic growth and delayed IMF funding.

Khan arrived amid tight security at the court in Islamabad on Friday as his supporters clashed with police elsewhere in the capital, broadcaster Geo TV reported.

"The court has given a two-week bail," Khan's lawyer, Faisal Chaudhry, told reporters.

Nearly 2,000 people have been arrested for violence since Khan's detention on Tuesday and at least eight have been killed.

Ancient Sikh holy book goes on display after 175 years

Highlights

  • 300-year-old handwritten Guru Granth Sahib shown at Edinburgh Gurdwara for first time in 175 years.
  • Holy book found in University of Edinburgh archives in 2020, oldest of its kind in UK.
  • The book was formerly in possession of Maharaja Kharak Singh, taken from Punjab fort in 1848.
Sikhs across Scotland came together on Sunday (16) to see a rare handwritten copy of their holy book, the Guru Granth Sahib, dating back to the 1700s.

The ancient scripture left the University of Edinburgh for the first time in 175 years so the community could hold a special ceremony at Edinburgh Gurdwara in Leith.

The book was found by academics looking through the university's digital files in 2020. It is thought to be the oldest of its kind in the UK.
