Over 10K London drivers register on Ola ahead of launch

INDIA’S Ola has announced that in just three weeks over 10,000 drivers in London have registered on the platform.

Bhavish Aggarwal, 34, who founded the company said: “Over the past three weeks, more than 10,000 London drivers have signed up both online and offline to drive with Ola, completing the required checks to drive on the platform. “

The documents of the drivers have been verified and mandatory training modules created by Ola, the south Asia based cab aggregator said.

Ola is an Indian ride-hailing company  based in the country’s southern city of Bengaluru.

The drivers can earn 100 per cent of their earnings for the first two months after the launch as the company has opted to not collect commission from its drivers, Ola said.

The company is scheduled to start its operation next month in the British capital.

Simon Smith, Head of International Ola, said: “We are very pleased with the overwhelming response from drivers across London. Every interaction with drivers in the city has presented us with an opportunity to create a platform that best serves their needs, as well as those of consumers.

“We are also very excited that a large number of these registrations have occurred through referrals and word of mouth amongst drivers, reiterating their trust in the Ola platform and the attractiveness of our offer. We look forward to working closely with drivers in building a high quality and reliable mobility service for Londoners.”

Ola has expanded rapidly across the UK since its launch last year, operating across 27 local authorities.

Cities such as Birmingham, Coventry and Warwick have seen more than double-digit growth in rides in the last quarter.

To date, Ola has provided around three million rides with over 11,000 drivers operating on the platform outside London.

All drivers on the Ola platform are private hire vehicle (PHV) licence holders, authorised to drive and extend their services to consumers by Transport for London (TfL), the south Asian firm said.

“This includes mandatory verification of documents, an 'enhanced' criminal records check, DBS training and medical examination amongst other TfL requirements.”

Drivers will also have to go through a mandatory training module from Ola that familiarises them with customer service, app, and platform usage, safety features, as well as various avenues of support available to them from the company.

Ola is India’s largest mobility platform and one of the world’s largest ride-hailing companies, serving over 250 cities across India, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand.

The deal, if finalised, would see Reliance overtake state-owned Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) to become India’s largest oil refiner. It would also provide Reliance with a significant expansion in fuel retailing, where it currently holds a relatively small presence.

Asda suffers nearly £600m loss as debt and IT costs surge

ASDA, one of Britain’s largest supermarkets, has reported a pre-tax loss of £599 million for 2024, swinging sharply from a £180 million profit the previous year.

The loss comes despite total sales rising by over £1 billion to £26.8bn, as the retailer faces mounting debt costs, falling sales, and spiralling spending on a major IT overhaul, the Telegraph reported.
