Bottle attack in Leicester bar leaves victim needing 30 stitches

A BOTTLE attack in a Leicester bar saw a drunk man smashing a bottle into another person's face after he was bumped into.

Perminder Singh Rana, a 38-year-old married father, of Scraptoft Lane, Leicester, has pleaded guilty to wounding with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm, it was reported on Wednesday (23).

The incident happened in The Terrace in Albion Street, off Belvoir Street, at about 2am two days before Christmas, in 2017.

The victim was enjoying himself when he accidentally bumped into Rana, and immediately apologised.

James Bide-Thomas, prosecuting, told Leicester Crown Court: "About two minutes later he went outside for a cigarette and saw the defendant coming down some steps and started to apologise a second time.

"The defendant pushed him to the chest and a couple of seconds later hit him around the face with a glass object, a bottle, which smashed and sprayed shards of glass.

"The complainant suffered injuries needing 30 stitches.”

The prosecutor said the incident made the victim anxious about going into the city centre in Leicester for a considerable time afterwards.

"He found it depressing being scarred for life, but has started going out again," he said.

Judge Philip Head told the culprit: "It was a disgraceful and a violent attack.

"You were drunk and it's yet another example of early hours city centre unprovoked violence in a pub or club."
