The Statehouse Investors Protection Unit (SHIPU) hosted a delegation from the United Kingdom and the Dawoodi Bohras Business Group to discuss investment opportunities in Uganda on June 11.

SHIPU in Uganda was established by the country's president, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, to create a favourable investment environment by protecting investors from corruption and bureaucratic inefficiencies.

Colonel Nakalema, Director of SHIPU, welcomed the delegation led by Jaffer Kapasi, Consul General of Uganda in the Midlands.

The delegation included Zoheir Damanwala from Burhani Construction, Abdeali Jamaly from SMB Trade Centre and Syston Hardware, Murtazabhai Faizi and M Alhussain from Oxford University, Mufaddal Loyeolwala from real estate, and a representative from the Dawoodi Bohras Business Group.

Colonel Nakalema assured the investors of SHIPU's commitment to protecting their investments and thanked ambassador Jaffer Kapasi for promoting Uganda as an investment destination. She invited the investors to explore Uganda.

The delegates expressed their commitment to investing in sectors such as hospitality and real estate.

The SHIPU portal offers benefits like streamlined communication, legal assistance, fraud prevention, and conflict resolution to support investors.

Starmer, Trump announce UK-US trade agreement

PRIME MINISTER Keir Starmer and US president Donald Trump on Thursday announced a trade agreement that reduces tariffs on British exports, including cars and steel.

The deal, reached after several weeks of talks, lowers levies on UK car exports from 27.5 per cent to 10 per cent and lifts tariffs on British steel and aluminium. The UK government said the move would save Jaguar Land Rover hundreds of millions of pounds a year, with the reduction applying to a quota of 100,000 cars — close to Britain’s total exports last year.

Cardinals to vote again after second black smoke signals no pope yet

CARDINALS will cast more votes on Thursday afternoon to choose the next pope, after a second round of black smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel, signalling that no candidate has yet secured the required majority.

The 133 cardinals began the conclave on Wednesday afternoon in the 15th-century chapel to elect a successor to Pope Francis. So far, two rounds of voting have ended without agreement. Black smoke appeared again at lunchtime on Thursday, showing no one had received the two-thirds majority needed.

King Charles leads VE Day service marking 80 years since WWII ended

KING CHARLES joined veterans and members of the royal family at Westminster Abbey on Thursday to mark 80 years since the end of World War II in Europe. The service was the main event in the UK's four-day commemorations of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, which marked Nazi Germany’s surrender on May 8, 1945.

Charles and his son Prince William laid wreaths at the Grave of the Unknown Warrior. The King’s message read: "We will never forget", signed "Charles R". William's wreath message read: "For those who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Second World War. We will remember them", signed "William" and "Catherine".
