Taapsee Pannu on Saand Ki Aankh casting debate: Did we question when Nargis Dutt played mother to Sunil Dutt?

The trailer of Taapsee Pannu and Bhumi Pednekar starrer Saand Ki Aankh was released yesterday. It received a great response and Taapsee and Bhumi are being praised for their performance. But, the film has started a debate on the social media that why the makers didn’t cast senior actresses instead of Taapsee and Bhumi.

Well, a Twitter user wrote that older actresses like Neena Gupta or Shabana Azmi or Jaya Bachchan should have been considered for the role. Gupta replied to the tweet, “Yes i was just thinking about this hamari umar ke role toe kamsekam humse kara lo bhai.”

Kangana Ranaut’s sister Rangoli replied to Neena Gupta, “Neena ji Kangana was offered this movie and she loved the true story of Grandmom’s achievements she suggested yours and Ramya Krishnan ma’am’s name for lead roles but these men can’t remove deeply rooted sexism from their filthy brains ...”

Of course, this debate can go on and on, but Taapsee took to Twitter to give her statement on the whole scenario.

In the statement, the actress has written, “I wonder… I just wonder… Do we ever want to embrace the positivity or just keep latching on to negativity and glorifying it to save our lack of risk taking tendencies. Have we really lost the shoulder along with our spine to support people who venture out of their comfort zone to bring about a change???? Or it’s just reserved for 2 females who at relatively nascent stage of their career venture out to do something, which we were told most of the people turned down? I wonder…. I just wonder… Did we ask the same question when we all loved what Anupam Kher did in Saaransh. Did we question when Nargis Dutt played mother to Sunil Dutt? Did we question John Trivolta for playing a woman in Hairspray? Did we question Eddie Murphy for playing a white Jewish man in Coming to America? Did we question when Aamir Khan played a college kid in 3 Idiots?”

“And in the future and are we going to question Ayushmaan Khurrana for playing a gay man in Shubu Mangal Zyada Saavdhaan? Or these lovely allegations and questions are reserved only for us??? Well even if it is… we thank you from the bottom of our heart for noticing our little effort to bring to you something new, something different , something you all want to comment on, something you all want to attach yourself to (be it in any way) and something that attracted your attention. After all cinema is all about that. Let’s keep the discussion going and hope your questions will be answered and doubts will be cleared this Diwali kyunki hum toh aa rahe hai is baar pataakhe nahi goliyaan barsaane. Thank you for all the love and attention you have bestowed upon our small film with BIG heart!” she added. (sic)

Well, keeping everything aside, Neena Gupta has wished the team of the film all the best. The veteran actress tweeted, “I liked the trailer, #SaandKiAankh and I have great respect for both the actors @bhumipednekar @taapsee chalo lets wish the film good luck also to #AnuragKashyap who I am very fond of, chalo apna time ayega ?????”

Directed by Tushar Hiranandani, Saand Ki Aankh will hit the screens on Diwali this year.

How Southeast Asian storytelling became one of Netflix’s fastest-growing global pillars

Highlights:

  • Netflix says global viewing of Southeast Asian titles rose almost 50% between 2023 and 2024.
  • Premium VOD revenue in the region reached £1.44 billion (₹15,300 crore) last year, with 53.6 million subscriptions.
  • Netflix holds more than half of the region’s total viewing and remains its biggest investor in originals.
  • New rivals, including Max, Viu and Vidio, are forcing sharper competition.
  • Local jobs, training and tourism are increasing as productions expand across the region.

Last year, something shifted in what the world watched. Global viewership of Southeast Asian content on Netflix grew by nearly 50%, and this isn't just a corporate milestone; it’s a signal. Stories from Jakarta, Bangkok, and Manila are no longer regional curiosities. They are now part of the global mainstream.

The numbers tell a clear story. Over 100 Southeast Asian titles have now entered Netflix’s Global Top 10 lists. More than 40 of those broke through in 2024 alone. This surge is part of a bigger boom in the region’s own backyard. The total premium video-on-demand market in Southeast Asia saw viewership hit 440 billion minutes in 2024, with revenues up 14% to £1.44 billion (₹15,300 crore). Netflix commands over half of that viewership and 42% of the revenue. They have a clear lead, but the entire market is rising.
