Romesh Ranganathan

EVER since his TV debut on Live at the Apollo in 2013, Romesh Ranganathan has gone from a secondary school maths teacher to becoming a household name. One of the most popular comics in Britain today, he has been announced as Claudia Winkleman’s BBC Radio 2 replacement in December 2023, cementing him as the busiest man in the UK entertainment industry.

He currently hosts his own show For The Love Of Hip Hop on Radio 2, which won him the prestigious Radio Academy Aria Gold award for Best Specialist Music Show in 2023. He hosted the BAFTA Television Awards ceremony, along with long-time friend Rob Beckett, in May last year. Both front the Rob & Romesh Vs, the comedy entertainment series in which they take on challenges to which they are not naturally suited. Throughout five series, and a few one-off specials, aired on Sky Max, the pair have faced a number of challenges, from opening a restaurant to joining the Birmingham Royal Ballet. A brand-new special, Rob & Romesh Vs F1: Monaco, streamed in February this year, saw them putting the pedal to the metal with some of the biggest names in racing. Last year, Ranganathan also collaborated with fellow comedian and podcast host Tom Davies for a British take on the new Amazon Prime Video reboot of Takeshi’s Castle, the iconic Japanese game show of the late 1980s and early 1990s. He is a regular on TV screens, from presenting Sky’s sports panel show A League of Their Own to starring in his BBC series The Misadventures of Romesh Ranganathan – a show which won the 2020 BAFTA for Best Features. His BBC Two show The Ranganation, won the BAFTA and Royal Television Society awards in 2021. Through the six seasons of the show, running from 2019 to 2022, he took a funny, topical look at modern Britain, joined by his very own focus group of 20 members of the public. The show also featured his mum Shanti, continuing their association from the BBC Three travel series Asian Provocateur, where she accompanied him on a trip to Sri Lanka, their ancestral country, and later to North America to meet more of their relatives, and the Dave show Judge Romesh, where he used his no-nonsense charm to solve minor disputes in a fictional civil court. His debut solo tour in 2016, Irrational, has been a standout success, selling over 100,000 tickets.

The Cynic’s Mixtape, Ranganathan’s last UK tour in 2020, sold out completely across the country. The lockdown helped him to hone his writing skills, and in October 2020, he published his second book,

As Good As It Gets: Life Lessons from a Reluctant Adult, a hilarious and painfully accurate dissection of what it really means to grow up. His first book, the autobiographical Straight Outta Crawley: Memoirs of a Distinctly Average Human has been a Sunday Times bestseller. He met his wife Leesa when they were both working at a secondary school in Crawley. They have three sons.
