All misunderstandings with Nepal over, says Modi

Indian prime minister Narendra Modi said India shared a special relationship with Nepal and noted that all misunderstandings with Nepal were over.

Modi made these remarks after talks with his Nepali counterpart K P Oli in Katmandu. "India stands shoulder to shoulder with the people of Nepal. India-Nepal ties are above inter-governmental relations. It is more like a family," said Modi. "I, the Indian government and the Indian people heartily felicitate the Nepali people for the progress made under federal democratic setup."


Modi and Oli's discussions also saw the countries agreeing to commence survey to link Katmandu with the Indian Railways. India will also be sending a team of experts to explore 4inland water navigation from Nepal to India.

"We are connected with Nepal through rail, water, transmission line, petroleum pipeline," Modi told the media. The prime minister also announced his decision to gift Nepal India-made indigenous radiotherapy machine for Bhaktapur-based cancer hospital.

On day 2 of his visit, Modi paid offered prayers at the iconic Muktinath temple. The temple is regarded sacred by both Hindus and Buddhists.

The prime minister wore a traditional red dress and carried out rituals both according to the Hindu and Buddhist tradition, reports said.

Modi is also expected to offer prayers at Pashupatinath temple after his return from Muktinath. He will also be meeting with various political party leaders. Before returning to New Delhi, Modi is scheduled to attend a civic reception hosted by Kathmandu Metropolitan City at Rastriya Sabha Griha.

Sri Lanka floods: Troops deployed as death toll rises to 69

SRI LANKAN troops worked on Friday to rescue hundreds of people stranded by rising floodwaters as weather-related deaths reached 69 and 34 people were reported missing.

Helicopters and navy boats carried out several rescue operations, taking residents from rooftops, treetops and villages cut off by the floods.
