World health day 2018: Here are a few simple ways to maintain fit and healthy lifestyle

The small lifestyle changes you make can help you lead a fit and healthy life. In today's fast-paced life, it might not always be possible to eat healthy or exercise regularly, but getting rid of bad habits, getting sufficient sleep and reducing stress can go a long way in helping you maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Get rid of bad habits:

Unhealthy addictions can be a major impediment to leading a fit and healthy life. Habits such as smoking, drug abuse and over indulgence in alcohol should be avoided, even if it takes some time. Also, it is beneficial to control ones intake of caffeine, sugar and processed food.

Get sufficient sleep:

Many of us do not get sufficient sleep, and most often we do not understand how it affects our physical and mental health. Lack of sleep can impair our concentration and affect our mood adversely, leading to a less productive day.

Research has shown that adequate sleep is essential for a healthy lifestyle and it benefits cardiovascular functions and repairs and rejuvenates the body.

Sleep also affects the quality of life.

"Many things that we take for granted are affected by sleep," Raymonde Jean, MD, director of sleep medicine and associate director of critical care at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City, was quoted as saying by Health.com. "If you sleep better, you can certainly live better. It’s pretty clear."

Reduce stress:

Work stress is unavoidable, so what one should do is learn how to manage it effectively. Indulging in activities such as exercise, meditation, spirituality or even indulging in your hobby can help get rid of the harmful effects of stress. Also, it is important to take appropriate breaks and vacations and surround yourself with positive people to help manage stress.

Also, a new research has shown that reducing the amount of time on social media can help alleviate stress.

ISKCON London has successfully reacquired 7 Bury Place, the original site of its first UK temple, at auction for £1.6 m marking what leaders call a "full-circle moment" for the Krishna consciousness movement in Britain.

The 221 square metre freehold five-storey building near the British Museum, currently let to a dental practice, offices and a therapist, was purchased using ISKCON funds and supporter donations. The organisation had been searching for properties during its expansion when the historically significant site became available.

The building holds deep spiritual importance as ISKCON's UK birthplace. In 1968, founder A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada sent three American couples to establish a base in England. The six devotees initially struggled in London's cold, using a Covent Garden warehouse as a temporary temple.
