THE latest play from Rifco Theatre Company is hip hop musical Mushy: Lyrically Speaking, which is an inspiring story based on real-life events and revolves around a young man with a debilitating stammer who finds his voice through music.

He also finds fame on television and goes on a journey of self-discovery. Actor Varun Raj plays the title role in the play, which embarks on a UK tour this week and is directed by Ameet Chana.

Eastern Eye caught up with Varun during rehearsals to find out more.

How did you feel landing the lead role in Mushy: Lyrically Speaking?

I was over the moon when I landed Mushy. It’s a great story that many people
watched on TV. Mushy’s story really captured the nation and I’m so glad it gets to do so again.

Tell us about the play and your role?

I don’t want to give too much away, but it’s a beautiful blend of lyrical narration and rap. The play follows Mushy through his teenage years into early adulthood so the character really goes through an amazing journey while maturing.

What is the biggest challenge of portraying this role?

It will be portraying the stammer Mushy has. With something like a stammer, I want to do it in an authentic and respectful way to Mushy himself.

What is your favourite moment in the story?

It is ‘the moment’ where Mushy puts the headphones on and reads a passage clearly for the first time while his teacher Mr Burton coaches him through it. Hearing him speak without the stammer is a real relief for the  character and in turn, the audience.

Tell us, what is Ameet Chana like as a director?

Ameet is a real actor’s director. He comes from an acting background so he really helps to create a comfortable space for creative expression. It’s great to work with him.

Who are you hoping connects to this story?

I’m hoping this story connects the most with Asian kids as their stories very rarely get told in this format or any for that matter.

What is it like working with a leading British theatre company like Rifco?

Rifco has a real family feel to them. They treat the actors really well and there’s always a laugh in the room when you need it.

What do you most love about the theatre?

I love the ability to be able to explore a character through scenes, not just in the rehearsals but through the performance too. No performance is the same. I love the live element of it. It’s alive, is breathing and is a touching distance from you. There is a real intimacy behind it.

What has been your favourite theatre play as an audience?

My favourite play was Woman In Black, simply because I love horror and thriller genres. So, I loved the scares that the play creates.

Do you have a dream role you would love to play?

I would love to play a Jedi in the Star Wars films or a Marvel superhero.

Why should we all come and watch Mushy?

Because it’s such a heartwarming story with so many ups and downs. I don’t recall a south Asian story being told in this way before. It’s vibrant, fresh and something that you will not forget.
