Director – Neeraj Ghaywan
It is an Indo-French co-production, produced by Drishyam Films, Macassar Productions, Phantom Films, Sikhya Entertainment, Arte France Cinema and Pathé Productions. Masaan follows two separate story arcs in the town of Varanasi that eventually converge. One follows the journey of Devi (Richa Chadha), who has to deal with the loss of her boyfriend and overcome the guilt she feels for his death. The second follows the journey of Deepak (Vicky Kaushal), who comes from a family that burns funeral pyres at the Varanasi ghats. The film was highly appreciated and at the Cannes Film Festival, the film won the FIPRESCI Prize in the Un Certain Regard section and a ‘Promising Future’ prize (Prix de l’avenir) for debut films.
2. Margarita, with a Straw
Director – Shonali Bose
It stars Kalki Koechlin as Laila, a teenager with cerebral palsy who moves from New Delhi to Greenwich village for higher education and comes of age following her complex relationship with a blind girl. Margarita with a Straw had its world premiere at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival. Kalki won Best Actress in Screen Award and National Film Award (Jury), and Shonali Bose was awarded in the NETPAC Award at Toronto.
Director – Vikramaditya Motwane
It is an Indian Hindi film produced by Sanjay Singh, Anurag Kashyap and Ronnie Screwvala. It is roughly based on the real life of Anurag Kashyap. The story is about a 17-year-old Rohan who is expelled from the reputed Bishop Cotton School, Shimla and he returns home to his abusive and oppressive father.
4. Pinky Beauty Parlour
Director – Akshay Singh
Akshay Singh has made his debut into direction as well as production with Pinky Beauty Parlour. The film captures the repercussions of the infamous Indian obsession with fair skin. The film portrays the lives of two sisters, Pinky and Bulbul, who run a beauty parlour in one of the small gullies of Banaras. It captures small-town life in a rustic and realistic way.
Director – Kanu Behl
It is a Bollywood drama film written and directed by Kanu Behl, co-produced by Dibakar Banerjee Productions Pvt. Ltd and Aditya Chopra under the banner of Yash Raj Films. It features actors Ranvir Shorey, Amit Sial, Shashank Arora, Lalit Behl and Shivani Raghuvanshi in the lead roles. The director in the film captures the volatility of a society where violence lies uneasily just below the surface. The film premiered in the Un Certain Regard section of the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.
