Teach children spirituality by example, says author

By: Keerthi Mohan

CHILDREN learn by observing their parents, and families can start at home, one of India’s leading women spiritual leaders has said in a new book.

Sadhvi Bhagawati Saraswatiji has written Come Home to Yourself, published by Penguin.

It covers some of the most pertinent issues affecting people today. There are chapters filled with direct transcriptions of answers from the satsangs she has given over the years. Issues addressed in the book include letting go of anger, knowing your purpose on earth, discovering inner peace and connecting with God, irrespective of religion.

On ways to inculcate spirituality in children, Sadhvi Bhagawati writes that parents should lead by example.

“Children pick up quickly from how we are and what we do, so the best way to raise a child to be spiritual is to be spiritual ourselves, just the same way that the best way to teach a child to be honest and have integrity is by being honest and having integrity ourselves. To raise them, we raise ourselves,” she writes.

“We need to let our children know that according to spirituality, Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — the world is one family. This is why we must live in such a way that our brothers and sisters around the world don’t suffer and die.”

Come Home to Yourself also explains the importance of meditation, which Saraswatiji writes “puts you in touch with what you can call a sixth sense, or another way of knowing.”

Originally from Los Angeles, Saraswatiji is a graduate of Stanford University, and she has lived at Parmarth Niketan, Rishikesh, in the Himalayas for about 23 years.

She regularly gives spiritual discourses, satsang and meditation, and is also involved in a number of humanitarian programmes as secretary-general of the global interfaith WASH Alliance and president of the divine Shakti Foundation.
