Celebrated South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-Ho, who shot to international fame after his last directorial Parasite (2019) went on to receive Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film at the recently concluded Oscars ceremony, tells an international magazine that is keen to direct a musical next.

“I would love to make a musical. Characters would begin singing, then think, ‘Oh my God, f*** this, this is too cheesy,’ and stop suddenly,” said the filmmaker who ranks 13th on Metacritic’s list of the 25 best filmmakers of the 21st century.

Bong went on to add that his musical would have to be different than what he has seen. “There are amazing musical films, like Singin’ In The Rain (1952), but when I watch them, I feel very embarrassed and start blushing. So, it would have to be different”.

Parasite, a black comedy thriller starring Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-kyun, Cho Yeo-jeong, Choi Woo-shik, Park So-dam, Jang Hye-jin, and Lee Jung-eun in important roles, rewrote the 92-year Oscars history by becoming the first non-English language film to bag the top hours including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film. It was the first ever win for South Korea at the prestigious awards ceremony.
