ASPIRING MODEL AND COUSIN SPEAK OF THEIR STRUGGLES
A MAN has been jailed for 16 years after he attacked an aspiring model and her cousin with acid last summer.
John Tomlin, 25, admitted intentionally causing the pair grievous bodily harm when he attacked Resham Khan, 21, and Jameel Mukhtar, 37, in east London last June.
The attack occurred on Khan’s 21st birthday.
Tomlim, who had previously been sectioned several times, apparently attacked the pair after he became involved in an argument with Mukhtar on the pavement. The judge said Tolin should serve a minimum of two thirds of the sentence before release.
Police confirmed they did not think the attack was racially motivated.
In a victim impact statement, Khan told the court her birthday was the day “[her] face was taken away from her” and it upset her to look in the mirror. “It brings back the incident on the day, it doesn’t look like me,” she said.
Both victims said they had considered suicide and have suffered with depression and anxiety since the attack. They are still being treated for their injuries.
Speaking outside court, Muhktar said Tomlin deserved the death penalty for his crime. “The sentence isn’t long enough,” Muhktar said. “My life has finished, I’m in continuous pain, I can’t sleep, and I can’t eat.”
Both Khan and Muhktar have suffered with permanent physical injuries, including lifelong scars to their faces.
The court heard how on June 21, 2017, at 09:13hrs on Tollgate Road in east London, Tomlin had got into an argument with Mukhtar, 37. The pair exchanged words on the pavement and when Mukhtar returned to his car, Tomlin approached and threw a corrosive substance at the man through the car’s open passenger window.
Khan was sat in the passenger seat and the majority of the liquid hit her. She began screaming and when Mukhtar tried to drive away he was blocked by parked vehicles.
As he tried pull out into the road, Tomlin, not content with the initial attack, ran around the car and threw more of the substance through the driver’s window onto the driver.
Tomlin ran alongside the car in an attempt to continue the attack and only stopped when the car outpaced him.
Sentencing Tomlin, Judge Sheelagh Canavan said there wasn’t a sentence she could impose that could “give back what [he] took from [the victims].
“Those injuries are truly horrific,” she said. “They will have to live with the effects for the rest of their lives.”
