SRI LANKA Cricket has removed its ODI captain Dimuth Karunaratne and dropped him from the squad along with four other senior players for its upcoming tour of Bangladesh later this month.

Kusal Perera will succeed the 33-year-old Karunaratne at the helm and Kusal Mendis will be the vice-captain for the tour as the selectors largely preferred youth to experience.

Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal, both former skippers who have played 367 one-day internationals between them, and Suranga Lakmal and Nuwan Pradeep have been overlooked as the cricket board seeks to build a younger team for the 2023 world cup.

Pacer Isuru Udana makes a comeback, while uncapped quick bowler Shiran Fernando is also included in the 18-member national squad.

Sri Lanka is scheduled to play three ODIs against Bangladesh from May 23.

The squad: Kusal Perera (captain), Kusal Mendis, Danushka Gunathilaka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Pathum Nissanka, Dasun Shanaka, Ashen Bandara, Wanindu Hasaranga, Isuru Udana, Akila Dananjaya, Niroshan Dickwella, Dushmantha Chameera, Ramesh Mendis, Asitha Fernando, Lakshan Sandakan, Chamika Karunaratne, Binura Fernando, Shiran Fernando.
