Every year, thousands of students appear for the IBPS PO exam. Some of these students have spent a lot of time preparing for the exam while there are some who are just trying their luck. Even if you manage to clear the exam, the hard work struggle doesn’t end. There are several duties that you will have to perform as a probationary officer. What is IBPS PO?

The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection or the IBPS conducts the exam for the Probationary Officer (PO) post in different banks. The position is named Probationary Officer because once you get selected after the IBPS exam, you will have to undergo training and remain on probation for a period of 2 years.

Before you appear for the IBPS PO exam, you need to make sure that you know everything about it. Many consider the exam to be hard. Once you are selected, you will have to undergo a difficult training period. During this period, you will learn about the different experiences in different fields of the bank like customer handling, credit, lockers, accounts, etc.

Job roles of a PO

The IBPS PO is a job that is considered highly reputed in the banking sector because of the multitude of benefits it offers. If you manage to become a probationary officer, you will receive training for multiple operations such as finance, collection, revenue, investment, accounting, billing, etc., during your probation period. You might also be asked to perform some functions like resolve customer queries, deal with public relations, address complaints and issues of customers, supervise and maintain branch activities, process loan details, bring new business to the branch, and handle daily customer transactions. Here are some other responsibilities you will have as a probationary officer:

  • Routine work like posting, account preparation, scrolling, etc.
  • Practical knowledge in accounting, finance, billing, investment, and marketing
  • Handle discrepancies in accounts
  • Issue checkbooks, ATM cards, demand drafts, etc.
  • Rectification of undue changes

Your work as a probationary officer will also include handling managerial tasks like managing cash balance, making decisions that benefit the bank, and supervising clerical work. Once you have completed the training period of 2 years successfully as a management trainee, you will be promoted to the position of assistant bank manager. This will change your work responsibilities as well. Your work profile will now involve handling daily customer transactions, cash management, draft issuance, passing a cheque, etc.

Perks of a probationary officer

The gross salary of a probationary officer is about Rs. 5,57,000 with HRA which makes the monthly salary to be about Rs. 40,000. Here is a basic breakdown of the salary:

 

  • Basic Pay – INR 23,700

 

This is a high pay scale for your first government job. Your overall income will be much higher.

 

  • House rent allowance 

 

This can vary between 6 to 15% allowance of your basic salary. It also depends on the location of your bank. If you are working in a bank, some of the most difficult things that you will have to deal with are renting and owning your house. When you are living out of the city, this can be a big expense.

 

  • Dearness allowance

 

A probationary officer received Rs. 10,700 as their dearness allowance, a calculation based on allowance and inflation. This is also the reason why this post is so desirable to so many candidates.

 

  • Leave fare concession and hospitalization reimbursement

 

Medical bills can make a big dent in your savings. If you are a probationary office, you will be able to get leave fare from your bank. You will get INR 700 per day for your room allowance in a hospital. It will also include an economy class flight ticket, first-class AC train ticket, taxi charges, or amount that you paid to auto.

 

  • Deputation allowance

 

During your probation period of 2 years, you are eligible to get Rs. 1500 per day other than travel expenses for relocation.

 

  • Other allowance

 

Other allowances include petrol expenses for 35 liters and daily newspaper expenses. There are some premium banks that offer entertainment and telephone expenses as well. Many banks offer reimbursements such as briefcase allowance, furniture allowance, life insurance policies, and cheaper loans. 

Some believe that the job of an IBPS PO is stressful. The truth is that it depends on where you are posted. If you are posted in a metro city, regional office, or head office, your job can be tiring. The workload in such branches is much higher. But, if you enjoy working in the bank, you will find the job of an IBPS PO fulfilling and challenging.

In an ideal case, you will be spending 7 hours working days, from 10 AM to 5 PM. These are the normal banking hours in the country. However, during the end of the financial year, when the workload is increased, your working hours might be increased. The lunch hour can vary from bank to bank and branch to branch. The most common lunch break time is 1:20 PM to 2:30 PM.
