A SENIOR British-Asian doctor has been awarded a top honour for his contribution to British boxing.

Dr Ashwin Patel, chief medical officer of British Boxing Board of Control (BBCofC), was handed the Sir Henry Cooper Award for services to boxing in 2019 last Saturday (2).

The award is presented annually to individuals for their outstanding contribution to British boxing.

Patel began work as a ringside physician at boxing tournaments for the BBBofC in 1984. He has provided medical support to the board for more than three decades.

Previously, only two doctors have been recipients of the accolade.
