Bollywood movies based on novels


This is a 2002 Indian romantic drama film directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and based on the 1917 Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel Devdas. This is the third Hindi version and the first film version of the story in Hindi done in colour. This film stars Shahrukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, Madhuri Dixit and Jackie Shroff.


It is a 2003 Indian period drama film directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi. The movie is about the Hindu-Muslim problems during the partition of India. The film is based on a Punjabi novel of the same name, written by Amrita Pritam. Urmila Matondkar, Manoj Bajpayee and Sanjay Suri are in the lead roles. Besides critical acclaim, the film also won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration.

3 Idiots 

It is a 2009 Indian coming-of-age comedy-drama film, directed and written by Rajkumar Hirani, and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, with a screenplay by Abhijat Joshi, inspired by the novel Five Point Someone by Chetan Bhagat. The film stars Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi in the title roles, along with Kareena Kapoor, Boman Irani and Omi Vaidya.


This is one of the Bollywood’s hits and classic movies Parineeta is also based on a Bengali novel, Parineeta by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. It stars the talented actors like Vidya Balan, Saif Ali Khan and Sanjay Dutt. It grabbed five Filmfare awards.


Haider is a 2014 Indian crime drama film written, produced and directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, and co-written by Basharat Peer. Haider, starring Shahid Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor is also an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet! Shahid Kapoor’s role was really appreciated.
